Installing the Java Run Time Environment

LogonAssist requires a Java Run Time Environment ('RTE') at Version 1.4.0 or greater.

You may already have a suitable Java RTE. How to check this depends on your operating system.

Windows and Unix

If your system does not start with a command prompt, open one as follows:

  • In Windows 95, 98, or ME:

click Start, point to Programs and then click MS-DOS Prompt

  • In Windows NT, 2000, or XP:

click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK

At the command line, enter

    java -version

If the Java RTE is installed, you will see something like this:

C:\Temp>java -version
java version "1.4.0"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0-b92)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.0-b92, mixed mode)

As long as the ‘java version’ is 1.4.0 or later, no further action is required.

If the java version is lower than 1.4.0, or you get something like this:

C:\Temp> java -version
Bad command or file name

you will need to install Java before you can use LogonAssist. It costs nothing, and may be downloaded over the Internet from http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html. (This site refers to the 'Java Virtual Machine'. The terms 'Java Run Time Environment' and 'Java Virtual Machine' are equivalent for the purposes of this document).

Mac

Please refer to your machine's documentation and to Apple's up-to-date Java information at http://www.apple.com/java/
